How is it made?
Manufacturing practices vary widely from one printing plant to another, but one thing is clear. It’s possible to produce a book in a manner that creates very little air and water pollution. But not everyone does.

The Problem:
Increasingly books are made in the Far East. Absent regulation, many manufacturers in these countries pollute at an alarming rate. According to a New York Times report, "Choking on Growth", “Public health is reeling. Pollution has made cancer China’s leading cause of death…air pollution alone is blamed for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year.” And this pollution is not limited to Asia, as “much of the particulate pollution over Los Angeles originates in China.” (Journal of Geophysical Research)

The Solution:
Books that carry the Green Edition label are manufactured in plants governed by US environmental laws, some of the toughest in the world. Strict compliance means that pollution from the plants is kept to a minimum. They are safe to work in and live near.
